A woman and her daughter filed a lawsuit Tuesday against a Southwest Side Buddhist temple and the monk they claim sexually assaulted and impregnated her more than a decade ago.
The 26-year-old woman claims monk Camnong Boa-Ubol sexually assaulted her more than 10 years ago at the Thai Buddhist Temple at 7059 W. 75th St., according to a suit filed in Cook County Circuit Court.
The woman, then 15, became pregnant as a result of the assault and her daughter is now 10 years old, according to the suit.
The suit claims the woman, identified only as Jane Doe, was a temple worker and potential member when Boa-Ubol approached her dressed in the orange robe associated with the temple. A picture of Boa-Ubol was hanging on the wall and she came to the temple multiple times for guidance, instruction and compensation for clean-up duties, the suit said.
Between July 1998 and May 1999, Boa sexually assaulted and battered the girl at the temple and she became pregnant, according to the suit.
The suit claims the woman went back to the temple in 2006 to request financial help for herself and her daughter and a female agent of the temple said the child should be signed over to the temple. The woman refused, the suit said.
The suit claims the woman suffered severe emotional distress, anxiety and incurred medical bills and the child has physical disabilities. It also says the temple failed to check Boa-Ubol’s background, did not supervise him around minors and did not have security cameras.
The four-count suit claims, among other things, sexual assault and battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress and gender violence and the mother and daughter are seeking more than $200,000 from the temple and Boa-Ubol.
Multiple calls were placed to the temple Tuesday night, but nobody answered the phone.
This is a sad event. If these charges are true then this asshole needs to be drummed out of the temple. There is no reason that something like this needs to be tolerated.
